Backlighting serves as the illumination source for LCD and is often used make them readable in low light condition.

LAMPEX currently uses three methods to backlighting for LCD Modules such as, Electroluminescent (EL), Light Emitting Diodes (LED) and Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (CCFL). Selection depends upon desired colour, available power and required life and also depends on the type of LCD module.

1. EL Backlight:

EL backlighting is thin, lightweight, low power, and fits between the glass assembly and PCB without any modification to the module and is considered is the original LCD backlight. Most positive mode displays come with a blue green lamp. Negative mode displays usually come with a white lamp. Other colours can be specially ordered to suit one's needs.

EL lamps operate from an AC power source; typically 400Hz at 70-110 VAC. Lampex supplies full range of DC to AC inverters to power the lamps from a +5 DC power source. Lamp brightness and life are inversely proportional. Therefore the harder the lamp is driven the brighter it will be, but the shorter its life. Under rated operating conditions lamp life is about 2,500 to 3,000 hrs. Operating conditions such as temperature and humidity also affect lamp life.

2. LED Backlight:

LED backlighting offers a significant life advantage over EL lamps, but at the sacrifice of power and module size. Lamp life is in excess of 50,000 hours in most cases. LED backlights are 1.8 mm to 8 mm thicker and are thicker than an EL backlight. Although the current consumption is high, due to high life expectancy, and also improvements in the construction and usage of ultra low power high bright LED chips, the LED Backlights have replaced EL in many applications and are serving to more than 60% of the backlighting needs in today's applications.
